Eat. Sleep. Chemotax. iGEM ♥
Ryan Quan
In other words, we’re getting older. Jacinto, Ryan, and I are just really really nerdy sometimes. Thank you, iGEM…
This whole July 3rd national holiday thing has been a topic of conversation recently. Popular opinion concludes July 3rd is not a national holiday.
Since the shuttles aren’t running today, the team has the day off. But the lab should know better by now; someone will come in. Finally, I get to decide when my day begins. And so, I slept in and started work at one. It was just Edna, Ethan, Allen, Katja, Jacinto and myself today. I was expecting labwork in bulk, but most of the work to be completed was not related to team HL-60’s work. Regardless, team dicty kicked our HL-60 asses in attendance. But Ryan and I have been owned by mammalian cells all week.
I helped Aynur with some digests and a gel. Other than that, I was useless. Fortunately, Allen had thirty transformations before the “workday” ended. I love work in bulk, so I offered to help. It’s been a while since I’ve done a load of work on my own.

I smell success… or perhaps just bacteria…
This is what I come home to.
Ryan and I fly solo today. We’re doing yet another transwell assay, but on our own this time around. But before the tissue culture room party begins, we picked up clones from our plates from yesterday’s transformations. Then labcoat. Gloves. Go. We grab some twelve-well plates and begin. A few minutes of preparation-hesitation passed before we finally picked up the pace. We knew what we were doing, so nerves can’t stop me now. We spent three to four hours on the transwell before preparing a ninety-six-well plate for FACs. But before any cell-counting action went down, Wendell and his niece arrive!
Caitlin will be shadowing me for a week and a half. I was anxious for the past few days, because I don’t know how well of a shadowee [?] I am. Fortunately, she makes the whole shadowing gig quite easy. Loved her from the start. I can’t wait until she gets her safety training out of the way, so Ryan and I can FORREAL show her the ropes! After a visit to the cave and brief introductions, Caitlin and I join Aynur and Ryan in the FACs room. The rest of the afternoon was filled with a whole lot of down-time. I felt a bit uneasy, cause I was expecting more lab, but Aynur assured me that we’ve done a lot for the day. I hope that is the case.
Hi, everybody. I would like you to meet my buddy.
